Govt wanted SPP to sue us: Greenpeace
Greenpeace said the federal government had tried to use taxpayers' money to gag it, offering a $36 million annual grant to an oil company if it took legal action against the group.
The Howard government was forced to respond to Greenpeace's claim, backed by a departmental email the environmental group obtained under Freedom of Information (FOI) laws.
The email sparked a call for a Senate inquiry and claims the government had been caught out heavying groups which opposed the government's views.
The document referred to a 2002 cabinet decision to provide Southern Pacific Petroleum (SPP) with the subsidy if the company agreed to sue Greenpeace.
